Ally, I'm so sorry. Sending hugs to you and Ma and Sister Natalie. I, too, think the bird was a gift to you -- a message that life had gotten too small and cramped and uncomfortable for Pa, so he spread his wings and flew to a better place for him.
It's funny, when my nan died, my mother had a blackbird in the house the next day.. Hmm..
