Worthing and Southlands Hospital

I have recieved an email from a friend of mine who lives in Worthing.

Worthing & Southlands Hospital is being threatened with downgrading. This will result in the closure of the A & E Department and the relocation of Maternity Services to Brighton, which is almost 20 miles away; or more than an hour's drive in rush hour or summer traffic.

There is a campaign to prevent this from happening and there is an online petition that you could sign if you felt so inclined.

I feel very strongly that although the NHS needs to put it's house in order, abolishing local services is not the way forward.

If you felt able to write a post with a link to the petition, that would be fantastic.

  1. I'm sorry to say this, but as a user of this hospital it deserves to be down graded.

I could go in to the tales of no mirth but lots of woe about how useless the maternity department actually is but it would bore you to death with the shear length of things that have gone wrong.....

  3. But surely it would be better to make it more efficient rather than just close it?

  4. I used to think that...but Worthing is institutionaly useless. Don't get me wrong, there are some lovely people that work there, put the systems, procedures, management and alot of the senior staff really are beyond redemption.

Their idea of a fail safe system is that more than one person tells you something. They are playing with peoples lives and they just don't have a clue.

My wife is due to give birth there in 3 weeks and she is genuinely terrified of dying whislt in there care - I whish it were an over dramatism, but sadly not. If I could afford the Portland we'd be there like a shot.

I am truely sad to see a hospital in this state, but for me, I don't think it is worth saving. I do agree that we could do without loosing another hospital, but I understand they are in the early stages of planning one on the outskirts of Horsham.

I think that that is what worries me most about the NHS as a whole - it seems like it's more about management than medicine - something radical *does* need to be done to sort it out - no-one should have the kind of fear that you describe on going in to hospital, certainly not to have a baby.

I hope that all goes well for your wife while she is there.
