technical interlude

Excuse me while I have a technical interlude.

Because I want to be exactly like Stegbeetle (who I think is about due for another dose of the Indie Virus, while I think about it, more info here), I have taken the cocomment box out of my sidebar. It was taking up too much room and I don't know that it was all that useful and/or interesting to people who are not me.

Instead I've replaced it with this little button in the sidebar, that goes to my cocomment page when you click on it.

If you haven't discovered cocomment already, it's a brilliant idea - it keeps track of the comments you leave on other people's blogs and informs you when other cocomment users comment on the same posts. I am using it with Firefox - it can be integrated completely so that it tracks your comments automatically. I think with IE you have to click on a little button at the time of commenting to get it to track your comment. It works well with Blogger, but it doesn't seem to work with Haloscan comments, which is the main other commenting system that most people I read seem to use. I think it's still a work in progress though.

So instead of the cocomment box, I have followed the example of many people who also deserve the indie virus and got myself a ZoomCloud. It picks up words from the front page of your blog and changes as you post different things. And when you click on the words in it, it takes you to the post that contains them. See over on the right, in the bottom half of the sidebar. Jolly exciting and a great way to avoid doing office administration.

And that is the end of this public information announcement.

Er, apart from Indie virus Indie virus Indie virus Indie virus Indie virus Indie virus.

That is all.

  1. The good folks a Cocomment are working on a way for it to capture all comments on a blog rather than just those by Cocomment users. Apparently it can be done already but trying to follow the instructions here: http://www.cocomment.com/teamblog/?p=63

made my brain hurt, so I'll wait until someone far cleverer than I makes it easier.

  3. Yes, I had a look at that and thought 'Hmmm. Yes, very useful. I'll come back later ...'.

  5. hey ally,
    thanks for the feedback
we're working on simplifying the integration process, you will soon get detailed instructions for blogger so you can easily integrate. It's can't be easier than that (a script to past in your template) but when I see the level of customization you have on your site I have no worries you'll make it ;-)

also, the problems with the boxes should now be behind us thanks to 4 new servers and a change in our DNS servers...

    thanks for using the service!

  9. I'm just terrible at remembering to click and I've taken the box off too. I may well go for the button too. *God, she's such a copycat*

Interesting updates Steg/Laurent will keep looking into it.

  11. I know what you mean about the co-commment box, they do get very long. I may or may not move mine. For now I'll leave it, because it's new and still has novelty value, to me at least.

I also looked at the integration instructions, but heard a whooshing sound as it all went over my head. It's nice to see there will be an easier option.

  13. Thank you for a dose of the virus! Just when the word 'Indie' was finally starting to shrink in my zoomcloud..... hehehe

I was going to take the cocomment box off but for different reasons - I keep forgetting to click the button so new comments don't go on. I downloaded the new firefox add-on thats supposed to make it automatic, but nothings happened. Hey ho.

Looks like I'll be the copy-copy-copycat in a few days.

    :-)

  15. I really like Firefox. My kids prefer the AOL browser. I have no idea why. I use WordPress for my blog which I can thoroughly recommend (WordPress.com has free hosted blogs), and there is a widget/plugin for a category cloud which I suppose is a bit like a zoom cloud.

  16. Cheryl: mind telling us on which blogs you didn't see any reaction after installing the extension? Are you sure you restarted your browser after installing it?
